Aircraft Carrier: American Ideas and Israeli Architectures after 1973

1973 war ein Jahr des Umschwungs für den globalen Kapitalismus, die strategischen Interessen der Amerikaner im Nahen Osten und Israels sozialen, ökonomischen und politischen Aufbau. Von Energiekrise und territorialen Auseinandersetzungen geprägt, transformierten diese Elemente im Zusammenspiel auch die israelische Architektur.
Die vorliegende Publikation untersucht das damals entstandene bauliche Umfeld anhand von zeitgenössischen Bildbeiträgen, historischen Materialien sowie Essays zur Architektur in den Vereinigten Staaten und in Israel. Die präsentierten Gebäude belegen zum einen die beispiellose Implementierung liberaler und kapitalistischer Prinzipien in einem Land, das bislang als sozialistischen Wohlfahrtsstaat bekannt war, zum anderen eine kulturelle Neuorientierung sowie ein architektonisches Programm, das heute angesichts einer erneuten großen Krise beleuchtet wird.

Together, these elements, shaped by territorial struggles and energy crises, radically transformed Israeli architecture. The publication looks at the built environments that emerged as a result through a combination of contemporary visual commentary, historical materials, and texts on architecture in both the United States and Israel. These environments not only tell the tale of an unprecedented embedding of liberal and capitalist principles in a country that was known as a socialist welfare-state, but of a cultural reorientation and an architectural agenda that is being questioned today, in light of another major crisis.
