Seurat’s Bridge: From Impressionism to Modern Art (Edition Sophien-Akademie)

Der Autor, Jahrg. 1948, studierte Kunstgeschichte und Philosophie in München undpromovierte dort zu Nikolaus von Kues`"Docta Ignorantia".Insbesondere beschäftigte er sich später mit Studien und Forschungen zu Impessionismus und Pointilismus. Anhand von Forschungen zu Gemälden von Georges Seurat, insbesondere zur "Brücke von Courbevoie", entwickelte sich Michael Frensch zu einem großen Kenner von Seurats Werk.

Between 1886 and 1887, the French artist Georges Seurat (1859-1891) painted the Courbevoie Bridge which links the Paris suburb of Courbevoie with the Seine island of a Grande Jatte. 'Le Pont de Courbevoie' is one of the most famous pictures by the founder of Pointillism and was created at the peak of his powers. Today it can be seen at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Repeatedly studied and written about by Seurat connoisseurs, it yet remains somewhat mysterious.The secret of this painting is researched in this book. Thanks to a painting hitherto completely unknown, which is very similar to 'Le Pont de Courbevoie' and signed 'Seurat', it has proven possible to better place the painting at the Courtauld Institute into the overall context of Seurat's oeuvre.
Layer by layer, the riddle of this painting is revealed. At the same time the reader is taken on an unusual investigative quest which also traces the background and meaning of the newly discovered picture and asks whether it is an authentic original, or a forgery.
Ultimately, the reader will discover that Seurat's Bridge leads, step by step, from Divisionism to Cubism and Abstract art.

Diese Arbeit eröffnet einen völlig neuen Zugang zum Werk des französischen Spätimpressionisten und Begründers des Pointillismus Georges Seurat (1859 - 1891). Ausgehend von einem bisher unbekannten Bild des Malers weist der Verfasser nicht nur dessen Echtheit nach, sondern zeigt auch, in welchem Zusammenhang dieses Bild mit dem Werk des Malers zu sehen ist. Vor den Augen des Betrachters und Lesers eröffnet sich eine Perspektive, die Seurat als Brückenbauer vom Impressionismus zum Kubismus und zur Abstraktion sowie als Wegbereiter für das integrale Bewusstsein im Sinne Jean Gebsers erkennbar werden lässt. Zugleich lädt sie den Kunstfreund zu neuen, belebenden Wegen im Umgang mit großen Werken der Kunst ein.
