Andreas Gefeller: Blank

Andreas Gefeller (geb. 1970 in Düsseldorf) suchte bereits in seinen Serien Supervisions und The Japan Series nach dem großen Überblick. In seinem jüngsten Fotoprojekt Blank nähert er sich der Erde zunächst aus dem All und präsentiert verführerisch strahlende Satellitenbilder von Ballungszentren bei Nacht. In ihnen verbinden sich technoide Lichtbahnen und Leuchtgitter zu kristallinen Schaltbildern menschlicher Existenz. Scheinbar in die leuchtenden Zentren hineinzoomend, verliert sich dann in den extrem überbelichteten Aufnahmen jeder Haltepunkt, an dem das Auge Orientierung finden könnte. Selbst massiv erscheinende Fassaden und Raffinerien werden zu filigranen, fast zeichnungsartigen Strukturen auf weißem, blankem Papier, und die Konturen von Containersilos oder Serverräumen gerinnen zu pulsierenden Mustern, die an binäre Codes erinnern: Das Licht verwandelt die Fläche des Fotos in einen randlosen und transparenten Raum und wird zur Metapher für eine in Sinnesreizen ertrinkende Welt. The images combine technoid strips of light and light grids to become crystalline circuit diagrams of human existence. Apparently zooming in on the radiating centers, the eye finds no halt in the extremely overexposed photographs. Even massive façades and refineries become filigree, almost drawing-like structures on blank white paper, and the contours of container silos or server rooms congeal to become pulsating patterns that are reminiscent of binary codes: the light transforms the photograph's surface into a borderless and transparent space and becomes a metaphor for a world drowning in sensory stimuli. The boundaries of photography are proverbially dissolved.
