Aleš Igli¿ is professor of biophysics and head of the Laboratory of Biophysics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. His research interests are in electrostatics, biomechanics, and statistical physics of biological membranes and lipid nanostructures.
The book surveys recent theoretical and experimental results on nanostructures in biological systems and explores possible applications. It takes a unifying approach starting from the single-particle energy, deriving free energy of the system and determining the equilibrium by minimizing the free energy, is applied in describing electrical and elastic phenomena. The authors present potential clinical uses of in hemostasis, inflammation, and spreading of cancer. They also cover interactions between biological membranes and inorganic nanostructures.
