Xavier Canonne has a PhD in Art History from the Sorbonne in Paris and is the director of the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi, Belgium. In the 1970s he became acquainted with the later Belgian Surrealists and even established a close friendship with some of them. He is the author of numerous books and articles about the Surrealist Movement and some of its most important figures in Belgium, including Marcel Marien, Irène Hamoir, Louis Scutenaire and others.
