Tenaliram was one of the mantras (Ashtadiggajas) of King Krishnadeva Raya, the founder of the Vijayanagara Empire, the king's chief advisor and king-jester. He was one half-pillar and pride of the king's royal assembly (Bhuvan-Vijayam). The reign of Krishnadeva Raya is believed to date from 1509 to 1529.
Krishnadeva Raya is counted equivalent to great persons such Ashoka, Samudragupta and Harshavardhana. Similarly, Tenaliram is counted as a diplomat like Acharya Chanakya, a torso like Birbal, Surajajb and a gentle comedian.
