Koen De Temmerman, Ph.D. (2006) in Classics, Ghent University, is Professor of Ancient Literatures and European Literary History at that university. He has published extensively on (characterization in) ancient fiction, and is the author of Crafting Characters: Heroes and Heroines in the Ancient Greek Novel (OUP, 2014) and the editor of The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Biography (OUP, forthcoming). Evert van Emde Boas completed his DPhil at the University of Oxford (Corpus Christi College, 2011), before going on to hold various teaching and research positions at the University of Amsterdam, VU University Amsterdam, the University of Groningen, and Leiden University. He currently serves as Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Calleva Research Centre at Magdalen College, Oxford. His research focuses primarily on the application of modern linguistic and cognitive approaches to ancient Greek literature. This is the fourth volume in the series Studies in Ancient Greek Narrative. The book deals with the narratological concepts of character and characterization and explores the textual devices used for purposes of characterization by ancient Greek authors from Homer to Heliodorus.
