Dimensions. Journal of Architectural Knowledge

Jan Silberberger, born in 1975, works as an advisor for strategic design at the consulting, planning and project management company Drees & Sommer in Stuttgart. Prior to that, he has been a senior assistant at the Institut für Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur (gta) at ETH Zürich. His research focuses on design methodologies and decision-making within planning processes.Kim Helmersen, born in 1987, is a doctoral researcher at the Institut für Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur (gta) at ETH Zurich. Prior to that, he studied sociology and landscape architecture in Copenhagen, and worked as a research assistant in Singapore. His research focuses on knowledge in the field of architectural design theory and pedagogy.

»Dimensions. Journal of Architectural Knowledge« is an academic journal in, on, and from the discipline of architecture, addressing the creation, constitution, and transmission of architectural knowledge. It explores methods genuine to the discipline and architectural modes of interdisciplinary methodological adaptions. Processes, procedures, and results of knowledge creation and practice are esteemed coequally, with particular attention to the architectural design and epistemologies of aesthetic practice and research.How do architects make use of existing knowledge when designing? And how do they make such efforts traceable? Dimensions Issue 05/2023, »Referencing in Architectural Design«, edited by Jan Silberberger and Kim Helmersen, explores the relationship between design work in its originality, and the wealth of knowledge and the cultural background which creative work necessarily draws on. Based on this, the contributors reflect on possible methods and practices to make this relationship visible and documentable, evolving around the question of how architects make use of existing knowledge when designing, and how they make such efforts traceable.
