Prof. Michael Diers ist seit April 2004 Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Kunstgeschichte an der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg und außerplanmäßiger Professor an der Humboldt-Universität in Berlin 1991-2001. (Mit-) Herausgeber der Reihe »kunststück« im Fischer Verlag. Zahlreiche Aufsätze und Buchpublikationen u.a. zu Kunst- und Medientheorie, Fotografie und Neue Medien sowie zur Kunst der Renaissance, der Moderne und des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Das neue Künstlerbuch von Paul McCarthy (*1945 in Salt Lake City) stellt ein Hauptwerk vor, das gleichermaßen auf den realen wie mythisch besetzten Ort künstlerischen Schaffens verweist: The Box (1999) ist McCarthys Atelier, eine vom Künstler ins Schwerelose und Groteske gekippte Alltagswelt. Von außen unscheinbar wie eine Transportkiste, legt das Werk im Innern eine kaum zu überschauende Vielfalt an Dingen und die intime Atmosphäre des künstlerischen Ideenkosmos offen. Größe und Inhalt entsprechen dabei genau jenem Raum, der Paul McCarthy im kalifornischen Los Angeles als Studio diente. Um 90 Grad gekippt mitsamt seinen etwa 3000 Gegenständen - vom Stahlschrank bis zum Bleistift - ergibt sich in der Wahrnehmung des Betrachters eine folgenreiche Verschiebung, die sich in der haptischen Qualität des Buches mit seinen zahlreichen Bildern eindrucksvoll fortsetzt. Die Ästhetik der »Desorientierung« findet sich in der radikalen Buchgestaltung wieder, die eng mit dem Künstler erarbeitet wurde.

Vom Künstler aufwändig und individuell gestaltet

The new artist's book by Paul McCarthy (* 1945 in Salt Lake City) presents one of the artist's most significant works: The Box (1999). The work is a displaced sculpture of McCarthy's entire studio. Inconspicuous from the outside, a fabricated wooden structure like a shipping crate with four holes indicating the windows and doors in McCarthy's actual studio, the inside reveals an overwhelming diversity of objects thereby creating an intimate portrait of the artist's mindscape. The contents of The Box are the actual items from McCarthy's studio in Los Angeles, California, containing approximately three thousand objects, from a steel cabinet to a pencil, drawings and artworks. Only one thing is amiss, the box is tipped ninety degrees on its side, its contents, fixed to their surfaces, appear to defy gravity and taunt the viewer's perception of right-side-up. This radical displacement is repeated in the design of the catalog, thereby creating an object that functions as yet another haptic inversion.
