Beschreibung:

Andrea Nagy teaches Old English and related subjects at the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Budapest, Hungary. She has translated several Old English poems into Hungarian and is currently working on a new Hungarian verse translation of Beowulf.
Wulf and Eadwacer and The Wife's Lament occupy a uniqueposition in the Old English poetic corpus, as the only poems whichhave women as speakers. Short, but difficult and often enigmatic, these poems never ceased to intrigue scholars. Numerous readings ofthe texts have been proposed, resulting in widely differing andsometimes contrasting interpretations. The present book summarizesand discusses these interpretations, and also presents a closetextual analysis of the texts. The book can serve as anintroduction or companion to the study of these poems, and shouldprove useful primarily to students of Old English literature, butit can also be of interest to anyone who would like to know moreabout these controversial, yet hauntingly beautiful gems of OldEnglish elegiac poetry.
