Cultures, Ideologies, and the Dictionary

Lexicographica. Series Maior features monographs and edited volumes on the topics of lexicography and meta-lexicography. Works from the broader domain of lexicology are also included, provided they strengthen the theoretical, methodological and empirical basis of lexicography and meta-lexicography. The almost 150 books published in the series since its founding in 1984 clearly reflect the main themes and developments of the field.
The publications focus on aspects of lexicography such as micro- and macrostructure, typology, history of the discipline, and application-oriented lexicographical documentation.

In der Reihe erscheinen Monographien und Sammelbände zur Lexikographie und Metalexikographie. Außerdem werden Arbeiten aus dem weiteren Bereich der Lexikologie aufgenommen, wenn sie zum Ausbau der theoretischen, methodischen und empirischen Grundlagen von Lexikographie und Metalexikographie beitragen. Zentrale Themen sind Mikro- und Makrostruktur, typologische und wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Aspekte und angewandte lexikographische Dokumentation.

A pioneering volume addressing issues related to cultures, ideologies, and the dictionary. A cross-cultural and cross-linguistic study with focus on selected Western and non-Western languages. A number of in-depth case studies illustrates the dominant role ideology and other types of bias play in the making of a dictionary. The volume includes invited papers of 40 internationally recognized scholars.
