Maria Cristina Amoretti is post doctoral fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Genoa, Italy. Her primary research interests are in the fields of Epistemology and the Philosophy of Mind and Science. She wrote Il triangolo dell'interpretazione. From an Epistemological Point of View (2011).Nicla Vassallo is Full Professor of Theoretical Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Genova, and is part of the teaching staff of the Doctorate in Philosophy. Her primary research and teaching areas are Philosophy of Knowledge and Epistemology. She also has serious research interests in Feminist Philosophy, Metaphysics, Philosophical Naturalism and Scepticism. Her latest sole-authored work is Per sentito dire. Conoscenza e testimonianza (2011) and her latest co-authored work is Piccolo trattato di epistemologia (2010). Her most recent edited book is Donna m'apparve (2009), and her most recent co-edited book is Terza cultura. Idee per un futuro sostenibile (2011). She regularly contributes to the cultural pages of various magazines and newspapers.
Reason and rationality represent crucial elements of the self-image of human beings and have unquestionably been among the most debated issues in Western philosophy, dating from ancient Greece, through the Middle Ages, and to the present day. Many words and thoughts have already been spent trying to define the nature and standards of reason and rationality, what they could or ought to be, and under what conditions something can be said to be rational. This volume focuses instead on the relationships of reason and rationality to some relevant specific topics, i.e., science, knowledge, gender, politics, ethics, religion, aesthetics, language, logic, and metaphysics, trying to uncover and clarify both the connections and differences in their various characterisations and uses.
The series provides a forum for innovative, high-quality work in all fields of analytical philosophy. The volumes in this series are published in either English or German.
