The purpose of this ebook is to capture the research that has been conducted on mentoring in order to develop a comprehensive research agenda to foster and guide practice and future study. This ebook provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the findings of research on mentoring, with a particular focus on education, along with recommendations for future research in five topic areas: foundations, best practices, cultural dimensions, policy, and technology. Although the primary focus of the book is on mentoring in education in formal programs and relationships, the ebook includes background and research information which should be of value to anyone interested in developing, implementing, and assessing mentoring endeavors. The work is an outgrowth of an initiative begun by a Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association and the Global Research Mentoring Network on Mentoring. This ebook begins with an examination of the foundations upon which mentoring is built, in which the writers delve into the literature and analyze, synthesize, and critique the theoretical foundations upon which mentoring is conceptualized and implemented. This is followed by a review of best practices in which the authors identify the problems associated with this term and offer a proposal for how to identify and research this topic area. The important and complexity of culture and its impact upon mentoring, with a particular focus on school and higher education environments is addressed in the third piece. The authors identify the critical issues that must be addressed in this global age. The fourth issue examined is policy, along with issue of power and control that underlie this topic. Although the research on this area is limited, the paper uncovers important findings that will enhance the realm of both practice and research. The final manuscript examines the use of technology in mentoring. It includes a proposal for implementing mentoring models that will take full advantage of the potential benefits that digital platforms offer, providing a glimpse into the future. This publication provides vital insights into the complexities of mentoring and the critical issues that must be addressed to assure its success. It also presents a comprehensive framework for engaging in meaningful research that will enable those who engage in these activities and who conduct research on it to develop and use a high quality, comprehensive body of literature focused on serving the field of practice and scholarship.
