Budd Schulberg, 1914 in New York City geboren, wuchs in Hollywood auf. Mit 22 Jahren begann er, für die großen Studios zu schreiben und verfasste u.a. die Drehbücher für die Erfolgsfilme »Die Faust im Nacken« (mit Marlon Brando) und »Ein Gesicht in der Menge« von Elia Kazan. Für Ersteren wurde ihm der Oscar für das beste Drehbuch verliehen. Der 1941 erschienene Roman »What Makes Sammy Run?« machte ihn schlagartig berühmt. Budd Schulberg starb im April 2009 auf Long Island.
