Beschreibung:

John J. Domagalski (pacificwarauthor.com) is the author of Under a Blood Red Sun: The Remarkable Story of PT boats in the Philippines and the Rescue of General MacArthur. It is the story of a small group of American sailors fighting the Japanese - and desperate circumstances - in the Philippines during the opening days of World War II
The riveting story of the USS Helenas final battle in Kula Gulf on July 6, 1943, and the tenacity and courage of her survivors, is told through a narrative, interwoven with firsthand accounts from the survivors. After the sinking, the efforts to rescue the surviving members of the crew by other U. S. naval vessels, followed by the eventual rescue of 165 crewmembers from a heavily occupied Japanese island two weeks later in a daring operation, provide a dramatic ending. The USS Helena was one of four vessels so named, but in this case named after the city of Helena, Montana. Though damaged in the attack on Pearl Harbor, fast action by her crew saved her. After repairs, USS Helena saw action at Guadalcanal before being torpedoed in Kula Gulf.
