Bringing together a number of experts in the field with years of experience in providing mental health care for individuals with mental retardation, this book is designed to help clinicians and health service providers with limited experience in working with such individuals. It focuses on assessment, recognition of psychiatric symptoms, and the various treatment options available. By using clinical examples, it discusses the difficulties of doing a comprehensive assessment, descriptions of some techniques that might be used, how the symptoms may manifest, and some commonly observed behaviors that help identify various mental disorders. Discussion of treatment includes modalities used with individuals with mental retardation, a description of how comprehensive care might be provided, and a review of the ethical issues involved in providing this care.
