The Weekend

Forty years ago, when they were both eighteen, it took Sam Roberts one summer to fall in love with Maggie McWilliams. Then it was time for college for both of them; they broke up and went their separate ways. Maggie moved on, got married, established herself in an academic career, and had twin daughters. Sam built a successful broadcasting career of his own—but he has never gotten over Maggie.

Now, at fifty-eight, Maggie is a semiretired widow, and her daughters are adults. Although Sam has never wanted to be a home-wrecker, he has kept up with Maggie’s life from a distance. He decides to pay her a visit one weekend and see whether he can convince her that they are meant to be.
