Olivia Manning (1908 - 1980) geboren in Portsmouth, England, aufgewachsen in Nordirland, absolvierte zunächst eine Ausbildung zur Malerin an der Portsmouth School of Art, zog dann nach London und widmete sich dem Schreiben. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs floh sie mit ihrem Ehemann R. D. Reggie Smith zuerst nach Griechenland und von dort nach Jerusalem, wo sie bis 1945 blieben. 1976 wurde sie Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Olivia Manning starb 1980.
