MATTHEW GEORGR EASTON (1823-1894) was a Scottish Presbyterian minister and scholar. The original work of the Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Third Edition, better known as Easton's Bible Dictionary, was published three years after his death, in 1897. He also translated two of the commentaries in the Keil and Delizsch commentary series from German. DAVID E. GRAVES (Ph.D., University of Aberdeen) has been involved in teaching the Bible and archaeology for more then thirty-five years and is currently an Assistant Professor at Liberty University, School of Divinity. He has taught archaeology at Oxford University, England; provided tours of the Ashmolean and British Museums; traveled extensively in the Middle East, and has been involved in Mount Ararat research with ArcImaging. He is currently a field supervisor at the Tall el-Hammam excavation project in Jordan, having excavated there for over ten seasons. He is the author of The Seven Messages of Revelation and Vassal Treaties; Key Themes of the Old Testament; Key Themes of the New Testament; The Location of Sodom; Biblical Archaeology Vol. 1 and Vol. 2; and has authored a number of articles on the Bible and archaeology.
This updated and revised edition of Easton's classic work, first published in 1897, has left the majority of the original material intact. The language and font was updated for modern readers, and the English Standard Version (ESV) has been used for modern translations of scripture where necessary. The maps, timelines, and charts have been updated to include recent sites based on the most recent archaeological evidence. An updated bibliography is provided whenever possible for many of the articles. This updated edition retains nearly 4,000 entries relating to the history, geography, theology, and literature of the Bible available as long ago as the 19th-century. Recent discoveries from archaeology have been referenced in the articles to reflect modern research. As one of the world's most trusted classic Bible dictionaries, this encyclopedic updated edition is sure to provide reliable background information for the study of the Bible for scholars and students.
