This biography of Russian conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky (1903-1988) examines a period and culture rarely dealt with by contemporary scholars. The last of a long line of distinguished Russian aristocrats, Mravinsky emerges from 20th century musical history as Russia's noble conductor. His connection to many prominent musicians-most notably Dmitri Shostakovich-and his life as conductor with the Leningrad Philharmonic provide unique insight into the Soviet music world.
