Walter Bonatti, 1930 in Bergamo geboren, gilt als einer der größten Bergsteiger und Abenteurer aller Zeiten. Er gehörte dem legendären italienischen Team an, das 1954 den K2 bezwang. Zu seinen alpinistischen Glanzleistungen zählen ferner die Ostwand-Durchsteigung des Grand Capucin (1951), die Winterbesteigung des Walkerpfeilers an den Grandes Jorasses (1963) sowie seine Alleingänge am Dru-Südwestpfeiler (1955) und an der Matterhorn-Nordwand (1965). Nach diesem Erfolg wandte er sich mit nur 35 Jahren vom Bergsteigen ab, um inspiriert von großen Erzählern wie Jack London und Herman Melville ferne Länder und Kulturen zu erkunden. Im Jahre 2000 wurde ihm der Offiziersorden der französischen Ehrenlegion verliehen. 2009 erhielt er den Piolet d'Or, die höchste Auszeichnung des Bergsports, für sein Lebenswerk.
