Laura Restrepo wurde 1950 in Kolumbien geboren. Ihre berufliche Laufbahn begann sie als Literaturdozentin an der Universität von Bogota. Sie arbeitete für verschiedene Menschenrechtsorganisationen und mußte aufgrund ihres politischen Engagements für mehrere Jahre das Land verlassen. Später arbeitete sie als Journalistin und schrieb Sachbücher und Romane. Die Kenntnisse, die Laura Restrepo während ihrer journalistischen Tätigkeit über die Drogenmafia erwarb, führten 1993 zu ihrem Roman "Der Leopard in der Sonne".
