Though unknown by this distinctive title, it none the less occupies a large place in savage societies, and is found at later and more advanced stages of growth; and though the area of its activities may have been encroached on, it yet holds its own on its undisputed ground. Even in these days of modern scepticism it has taken on a fresh lease of life, and the activity and growth of Christian Science alone is sufficient to show that there is a vital tenacity about Spiritual Healing which defies the assaults and even the indifference of widely differing ages. The cause of that tenacity, and the place which Spiritual Healing occupies in promot ing, or it may be in hindering, the well-being of man, it is the purpose of the following pages to set out. There are, as usual, two courses Open to an inquiry of this sort. We may start with a definition of what Spiritual Healing is, and then proceed to marshal the evidence in support of our a priori definition.
